Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Redefines Tradition: Every Seminarian is Chosen, Not Few

By Sem. Mboriidie Simon

In an inspiring and thought-provoking address to the seminarians at St. John Paul II Institute of Philosophy on Sunday, October 22, 2023- Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro defied convention and offered a fresh perspective on the age-old saying, "Many are called but few are chosen." Instead, Bishop challenged the traditional belief that only a select few would ultimately be chosen for the priesthood, turning the phrase on its head and declaring, "For me, it's the opposite."

The Ordinary of CDTY urged the seminarians to recognize that their presence at the seminary was not a mere coincidence but rather a divine calling. The Prelate encouraged them to focus on the things that can truly help them grow, to engage in positive discourse, and to prioritize discussions of great significance. He emphasized that the seminary is for only individuals who aspire to become priests, and he placed his hope in these young men, believing that they could all become chosen vessels of the Church.

Bishop Hiiboro reinforced the importance of respecting formators, not only within the seminary but also in their interactions with society and parishes during holidays. He reminded the seminarians of their role in imparting good virtues to the youth during holidays, thereby shaping them into responsible and virtuous individuals of tomorrow.

On the other hand, the esteemed rector of the St. John Paul II Institute of Philosophy, Rev. Fr. Vairi Natale, took the opportunity to shed light on the life and achievements of Pope John Paul II, the beloved Pontiff who tirelessly served the Church and initiated the World Peace Day. Fr. Vairi noted that Pope John Paul II was a linguistic virtuoso, proficient in nearly eight languages. He called upon the seminarians to draw inspiration from the Pope's life and be peace ambassadors in society while nurturing their intellectual capabilities, following in the footsteps of their patron saint.

The rector extended his heartfelt appreciation to the Bishop for his fatherly love and his gracious presence during the Feast of the patron saint of their seminary. His visit served as a source of great motivation for both the seminarians and the seminary staff.

The feast of St. John Paul II, celebrated by the Catholic Church on October 22nd, is a significant date for Catholics worldwide. It's a time to remember the life and teachings of one of the most beloved popes in history. It is especially meaningful for seminarians who look to the legacy of Pope John Paul II as a guiding light on their journey to priesthood.
