June 29, 2020 marked the 12th year since Rt. Rev. Eduardo Hiiboro Kusala was appointed and consecrated as the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio. This year’s celebration is not as usual because of the COVID 19 outbreak which has disrupted many religious ceremonies as well as other day to day activities in most parts of the world.

During the previous years, Bishop’s anniversary was celebrated in the church, as Christians join in Eucharistic celebrations led by a priest as the main celebrant. The Bishop would later on be given time to deliver his speech to Christians.

This year however, the scenario was different, for starters, the Bishop is out of the country, he left in February to seek medical attention in Nairobi, Kenya, unfortunately COVID 19 lockdown restrictions and borders closure has prevented him from returning back home.

Another remarkable occurrence during this year’s celebrations is that many Christians and CDTY priests celebrated this day at their homes and most of them are using social media platforms to wish the Bishop a happy anniversary.

From the WhatsApp group of Anisa FM news forum Yambio, one of the priest wrote, “Dear Bishop, every year we jubilate on this day as we remember your solemn ‘yes’ to be our faithful shepherd. This year is as special as would silver, golden, diamond anniversaries. We celebrate your GREAT number 12 which speaks volumes of your great work so far. Congratulations for the 12th year of shepherding God’s people in CDTY while putting Jesus at the center,” Father John Ngbapia Bakiri wrote.

Another church member on the same group, madam Arupai Mary wrote “Happy anniversary your Lordship I still remember this day as if it were yesterday, may God bless you with wisdom to continue leading his flocks.”

On another WhatsApp page known as My CDTY open book, messages flooded just to mention one, Bono John wrote “congratulations for the 12 years of serving the people, may God give you more power, knowledge and years to continue serving his people. The people of the diocese miss you, till then remain blessed.”

Those are just some examples; all social platforms are flooded with good wishes messages for the Bishop.

In his message to Christians, Bishop appreciated the continuous support from the society, as he calls everyone to pray for him as he prays for them. He asked all the seminarians to develop a culture of creativity and innovations as he assures them his love.

Commenting on COVID 19 bishop wrote that, he is concerned with making Jesus the center of his people assuring all that his focus is grounded in the wellness and wholeness health program for all.

“My 12 years is a blessing not an advantage! I am grateful to Jesus Christ who called me out of my unworthiness to serve him as one of his apostles! I thank my mother church and especially Pope Francis for his trust and love” Bishop wrote.

Bishop Hiiboro further thanked all the partners for their support to the diocese including the government of South Sudan and the humanitarian agencies. He finally assured Christians and the society at large that he will work hard on the structure efficiency, transparency, accountability and effectiveness, asking all CDTY people to plant seeds of ownership and belongingness in their lives.

Bishop Hiiboro is the second Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio, after the late Bishop Abangite Gasi.
