The training on Corporate Governance for refugee led CBO’s (Community Based Organization) kicked off in Arua, West Nile Region of Uganda and will take three days. Corporate Governance training was organized by Youth Social Advocacy Team (YSAT) and Network of South Sudan Civil Society Organization in Uganda (NOSSCOU) and with the support of OXFAM (Oxford Committee for Famine Relief).
Speaking during the opening of the three days training the Coordinator of NOSSCOU, Kuol Arou Kuol attributed the importance of the workshop saying that it would help in transferring knowledge and skills among the organizations in the refugee settlement. Kuol said that with the basic training many refugee CBOs would share many ideas that would transform the lives of refugees in the camp and the community. He pointed out that women lacked participation and are not well represented in the society, they are left out and suffer a lot through Gender Based Violence.
“As we are entering the 16 days of Activism against gender based violence, we need to respect the views of all aspect,” Kuol added. He urged all South Sudanese leaders to be leaders who can transform the nation in all aspects. Kuol further urged the public to follow the standard operating procedures of COVID 19: wearing face mask, keeping social distance, hand washing and staying away from crowded places. He also urged the refugee led CBOs to play a key role in educating refugees on the preventive measures to be able to prevent the spread of COVID 19 virus in refugee settlements.
John Jal Dak the director of YSAT said that it was an opportunity for refugee led organizations to come together since the pandemic outbreak earlier this year. Jal Dak stated that refugee led CBOs needed to share the concerns of the refugees and also the matters affecting South Sudanese in Uganda by addressing ways of improving their lives.
The executive director of Vision for Humanity, Asau Sunday who is the facilitator of the workshop, said that the training aimed at building a strong leadership in the refugee settlement. Sunday added that refugee led organizations need to play key roles in empowering youths and women in the camps. He also said that the main target for the training was for the respective organizations to gain practical skills in corporate governance and to improve governance in those various organizations.
