Civil Society Concern’s over the Division in the Government of W.E.S

The network for civil society in Western Equatoria State is concern with the current division in the government of western Equatoria State, stating that the division might escalate to cause insecurity in the State.

Over the weekend, a section of government officials including the deputy governor, the right State Hon. Speaker and representatives of other political parties issued out a press release withdrawing their active participation from the government of western Equatoria, alleging corruption and mismanagement of resources by the state governor.

The division within the state government has sent fear and panic among the civil population in the State couple with the introduction of night patrol within the town and residential areas in Yambio County. 

The press release issued out yesterday 12th, October 2022 by the Network for civil society in Western Equatoria, states the division has raised serious concern among the civil population and the civil society organizations operating in the State.

 “Such situations are likely to provoke violence conflict among the parties and will definitely lead to lose of lives, insecurity to the common citizens, opportunity for criminals to engage in criminal activities such as highways and households arm robbery, rape and targeted killings. This has already started in Yambio town with motorcycles being robbed and night thefts. The status of service provision in the state will further deteriorate, hence cause more suffering to the common men, women and children’s welfare.

They further explained that such situation might lead to displacement, and in line with the situation, they strongly reject any attempt that might result to violence, conflict lawlessness loss of properties and the suffering of the civil population reads the statement.    

The network further urged the state unity government which consist of mal- political parties, to work in collaboration and consultation for any decision making process as enshrined in the peace agreement to avoid regular disagreement. 

On 7th Oct 2022, representatives of SPLM-IG, SSOA, OPP, FDs and PLM-IO release a joint press statement withdrawing their active participation from the government of western Equatoria state under the leadership of Gen. Alfred Futuyo Karaba, over alleged corruption, mismanagement of public resources and misunderstanding between the state top leadership.

The joint press release from the section of state government officials’, appeals for the intervention of the national government to resolve the issues and misunderstanding affecting the state.    

Meanwhile the State minister of information and communication in a press statement to Anisa radio says the accessions leveled against the governor are unjustifiable.

Hon. Isaac Mursal Timon says the governor Futuyo has asked the minister of Cabinet Affaires to invite what he termed top leadership from the national government to come for intervention in the ongoing division in the State government.
