Zereda Lillian, a 20-year-old resident of Yambio in Western Equatoria State, has called upon young Girls to focus on self-reliance instead of waiting for white-collar jobs.

Following her journey, Lillian believes that youth should create their opportunities after graduation rather than depending solely on formal employment.

Lillian, who completed her senior four certificates in 2023, chose an unconventional path after high school, she enrolled in a four-month welding training program at Yambio Vocational Training Center (DDR), where she earned a certificate and received a start-up kit.

“The people of Yambio County trust me because of the services I’m delivering,” Lillian shared "I'm always busy with work, and my family is benefiting from my daily earnings.”

With her income, Lilian disclosed that she can pay school fees for her younger siblings, two of whom are in senior one, and three others are in primary school.

“Education is the key to success in life”, Lillian said, she added, "In South Sudan, if you are not self-reliant, it’s difficult to achieve anything”.

She also appealed to her peers to avoid dependence on men for financial support “Men's support is not consistent; we, as young girls, need to take control of our own lives”.
