Equatoria Community Organization in UK supports Flood victims in Western Equatoria State
Victims of floods, which affected a number of counties in Western Equatoria State which includes Ibba, Maridi, Gangura Payam in Yambio County, and Nzara County in September last year between had a reason to smile after the Equatoria Community Organization belonging to a group of South Sudanese based in United Kingdom(UK) sent donations of assorted items.
The distributions of the donations were done through the Compassionate Humanity Organization of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio which has been supported the flood victims in four Counties in Western Equatoria State.
Speaking during the distribution of items in Nzara County, a beneficiary, Mama Arketa Francis expressed that she was touched by the support because which she said has enabled her to feed herself and some orphans she is currently taking care of.
“The support we are receiving from Compassionate Humanity Organization is very important to us who were badly affected by last year’s floods due to heavy rains here in Nzara County; many families, mine included were devastated,” Mama Arketa expressed.
John Maburuk Badi, a community leader from Dardukanin in Nzara said that, although the support was not sufficient, it meant a lot as some families were left with nothing after the floods destroyed their livelihood and houses.
According to John, the items distributed included bars of soaps, packets of salts, and maize flour, which were very important. He expressed that the distribution processes, which included assessments of the affected households were fair and better based on the capacity of the Compassionate and Humanity Organization.
Banzenze Simon Peter, an employee at Compassionate and Humanity Organization disclosed that Equatoria Community Organization donated $2,000 to them and so far, they have managed to reach and cover Ibba, Maridi, Gangura Payam in Yambio County and Nzara County. In Ibba they distributed to 132 households out of which 73 were female-led households.
In Maridi they distributed to 52 households out of which 27 were female-led households, at Gangura in Yambio County 38 households benefited, out of which 21 were female-led households. In Nzara County 92 households benefited, out of which 47 were female-led households. This brings to a total of 314 flood victims who have been reached so far.
Mr. Banzenze further expressed that due to lack of resources, they at Compassionate and Humanity Organization are not able to support all the flood victims because the number is big. He further indicated that the majority of the flood victims are in dire need of shelter, agricultural tools, food items, and non-food items before the new rain season starts now.
The Government of Western Equatoria State through the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) and the security personnel have been supportive of members of the Compassionate and Humanity Organization. This has enabled the organization to reach all the areas targeted with the distribution.
Compassionate and Humanity Organization was founded by Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio fear years ago to extend services to the most vulnerable community members especially people with disabilities and the sick and elderly in the communities around the diocese.
