The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is calling on the people of South Sudan to cooperate with the aid workers as a holistic way of tackling the food crisis
OCHA criticized the attack on civilians and humanitarian workers in the country by armed elements and urged the authority to take action.
World Humanitarian Day is marked on the 19th of August annually, an international day dedicated to recognizing humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes.
Ms. Sara Bysolo Nyant, the Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan, urged the affected communities to jointly take responsibility and partner with the humanitarian agencies to attain lasting peace and development in the country.
“We need urgent collective efforts to help the vulnerable population in South Sudan; it takes a village to raise a child, it takes an array of partners to support crisis-affected people”, she stated.
Ms. Sara said there is a need for partnership between the UN development system and the government to increase investment from both the government and the UN including development actors, World Bank, and Africa Development Bank.
Humanitarian works to save lives but it takes a village; it’s not only humanitarian workers that will solve the issue of South Sudan. She reiterated.
The UN reported that over 134 humanitarian workers are being killed since 2013 and others harassed along the road by unknown assailants while saving the lives of vulnerable people in South Sudan.
Sara appealed to the government to avail security for the citizens and allowed free access for humanitarians possibilities to combat the humanitarian crisis.
