The pastoral annual general assembly ends with a call for environmental conservation
By Baraka John
As the annual pastoral general assembly ended on Thursday 26th January 2023, there was a call on the participants of the assembly to observe environmental conservation in their parishes for future generations as well avoid drought.
In his concluding remarks, Bishop Edwardo Hiiboro urged the participants to ensure the environment in the Parishes is conserved, “You have to be aware of environmental hazard acerbated by massive forest destruction, mostly huge cutting of trees. This is likely to cause an environmental hazard in terms of drought, drainage of water sources and poor agricultural yield, as such affects future generation”, Hiiboro stated
In Western Equatoria State, third–a quarter of community members living in rural areas depend on charcoal production as one way to sustainable living.
The assembly came up with more than fifty resolutions including cutting one tree and planting five. The assembly also resolved food security and added value to products the Diocese has, as well as planting trees to harvest timbers to have enough money to run the affairs of the Parishes and the Diocese.
Other resolutions include developing pastoral policies to guide the liturgical activities, translating of Old Testament into Azande language, establishing missionary childhood in all the parishes, pastoral visits by the bishop to all the Parishes, Parishes to open petti businesses for self-sustainability, income-generating activities, embark on farming for self-sustainability, corporative to be initiated to enhance economic growth, accountability and transparency should be observed.
Closed to two hundred participants from the thirty-five parishes under the Catholic Diocese of Tambura Yambio, deliberated on the achievements, and challenges and develop new plans for the growth of the Diocese in the last three days of the annual pastoral general assembly at Palica in Nzara County.
