CODEP Launches Inter-Secondary School Debate to Promote Peace

Four secondary schools in Yambio are participating in a debate competition to promote peace and co-existence among students.

The computation has been organized by the CODEP the Department of Peace-building of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura Yambio, through its peace mission program in three counties in the State.

The secondary schools taking part in the competition include Abangite College School of Science and Technology, Bangasi Academy, Kings College, and Alliance High School.

On Wednesday Abangite College took the win against Bangasi Academy with motion conflicts are Elements of Destructions in South Sudan. Abangite won the debate and is now through to the final waiting for the winner of the debate between Kings College and Alliance high school.

Kings College and Alliance High School will tarsal a debate on a Motion; “Citizens should have the right to own guns in South Sudan”.   

The two secondary schools that will qualify for the final will base their motion on “Federalism as the Best Form of Government in South Sudan”.

Speaking during the launch of the competition Mr. Beneth William Bazia the focal person for peacebuilding at CODEP said that the aim of this exercise is to inculcate the spirit of unity and peacebuilding among the students from different parts of the state.

Beneath said the competition will be extended to other secondary schools within the areas.

“This project was meant for Tombura, Ezo, and Yambio, but in Yambio this is the first time for us to launch the project here. Most of the time we do the project in Tombura and Ezo. I want to thank the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura Yambio for initiating this project to help our people in the State and South Sudan at large”.

On the other hand, the head Master of Bangasi Academy secondary school Mr. Mungu Feni Patrick described the exercise as important because it builds the brains of students.

The CODEP Peace Building Project was launched on 21st March 2023, under the theme “Let them all be one”. The counties that are beneficiaries of the project include Yambio, Ezo, and Tambura.

The peace build project was initiated after the inter-communal conflicts that destabilized peace across the state, the aim of the project is to reconcile communities involved in the conflict and foster out co-existence hence creates an enabling environment for all.
