Yambio Residents Urged to Stay Calm as Security Forces Address Gunfire Incidents

The Commissioner of Yambio County, Mbiko Barakati, has assured the public that the government remains in control of the security situation in Yambio, despite ongoing sporadic gunfire that has rattled the town’s residents in recent weeks. Speaking in an interview with Anisa Radio on Monday, Commissioner Barakati urged locals to continue with their daily routines, emphasizing that security forces are actively addressing the issue.
The commissioner reassured the business community, saying, "Security organs are vigilant and monitoring the situation closely”.
In the past two weeks, several neighborhoods, including Masia, Gangara Emilia, and Sug Siro, have experienced random gunshots during the evening hours, leaving the community in fear and confusion about who is responsible.
The unsettling situation has had a significant impact on the local economy, particularly in Masia Market, the town’s main night-time business hub. Many vendors and customers have stayed away from the market, resulting in financial strain for business owners who rely on night sales to support their families.
The commissioner appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The spate of gunfire incidents began in August when unknown armed individuals attacked a base of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) in Sug Siro, killing one soldier and injuring another. Just days before that, armed men opened fire at Masia night market, wounding two civilians and two SSPDF soldiers.
