The bishop of the catholic diocese of Tombura yambio sends a message about the world literacy day.

Barani Eduardo Hiboro Kusala said, as the people celebrate the world literacy day every 8th September, it is a day meant to inform the world about the importance of education as the key to success which can remove illiteracy.

The bishop said that this is the day to distract the disruptions that COVID-19 brought to humanity and the people should take it as a time to make education their first priority owing to its importance.

Everyone should embark on intensive work to provide learning access to all the children as this is a primary responsibility for those who have acquired knowledge, the bishop added. He however appealed to the young people to make time for extra studies and not rely only on what they have learned at school. He encouraged them to read more novels, and especially constructive books including the Bible, or even read the books online (google).

At the same time, he encouraged the young people to engage in writing about the history of the country while at the same urging those who can afford to support others especially from less privileged families to do so. He said that by supporting others, it would be possible to fight illiteracy among South Sudanese.

He called upon young people who without any qualifications refer to themselves as Dr. so and so or engineer, professor, or prophet to desist from misleading the public.

“If we have a high literacy in the country like Zimbabwe which is about 98% literacy in Africa, we will be in a position to develop,” the Bishop said adding that being literacy, however, does not come from school only but if you know how to do the domestic works like, building, cook well, baking bread, knows how to sweep well, and doing the best of your talent, this is also another form of being literate.
