HIS EMINENCE CARDINAL ZUBEIR WAKO CELEBRATES HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.His Eminence Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako celebrated his 80th birthday on 27th of February 2021.

BIO OF CARDINAL ZUBEIR WAKO

His Eminence Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako was born on the 27th of February 1941 in Mboro the southern part of the then Sudan and the current Western Bahr El Ghazal, South Sudan. On July 21st 1963 he was ordained a priest. Cardinal Zubeir Wako began his priestly ministry as an assistant parish priest and as inspector for Christian Religious Education in the schools of Gogrial District. He later served as rector of St. Anthony’s Minor Seminary, Bussere and was procurator for the Vicariate of Wau, where he also served as vicar delegate. He also held the post of provincial commissioner of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.

His Eminence was appointed Bishop of Wau on 12th December 1974 and was ordained on 6th April 1975.On the 30th of October 1979 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Khartoum and later on 10th October 1981 he became Archbishop of Khartoum.

Cardinal served as president of the Sudan Catholic Bishop’s Conference in 1978-1990 and 1992-1999 and also in 2012. He holds a licentiate in theology with specialization in pastoral theology. He participated in many Synods amon. His Eminence Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako celebrated his 80th birthday on 27th of February 2021.g which the III Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (October 2014) on The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization.

 Zubeir Wako was named the Cardinal-Priest of Sant'Atanasio a Via Tiburtina by Pope John Paul II in the papal consistory held on 21 October 2003. He participated in the conclave of April 2005, which elected Pope Benedict XVI and the cconclave of March 2013, which elected Pope Francis.

Cardinal Zubeir Wako escaped an assassination attempt by a member of the predominantly Muslim Messiria tribe when celebrating Sunday Mass on 10 October 2010.He retired as Archbishop of Khartoum on the 10 December 2016 and was succeeded by Coadjutor Archbishop Michael Didi Adgum Mangoria.

On March 1st all the clergy, nuns, deacons and everyone is invited to the Vatican Embassy in Khartoum, to celebrate and partake with the cardinal.
