Small Kiosk, Big Impact: Fr. Elia's Creative Funding Brings Comfort to St. Mary's Students

By Sr. Henriette Anne, FSSA

Fr. Elia Kanido Alfred Zomai, the headteacher of St. Mary Primary School and a figure beloved by both students and staff alike, took a monumental step to enhance the learning environment at St. Mary's. Despite facing financial constraints that had long plagued the school, he embarked on a mission to provide better facilities for the pupils. His commitment culminated in the purchase of 15 brand-new desks, a simple yet profound gesture that would profoundly impact the lives of the students.

In his message to the Rurugene Online Newsletter, Fr. Elia recognized the pressing need and took decisive action to address it. His resourcefulness was evident as he creatively sourced funds from the modest proceeds collected from nearby kiosks, demonstrating his determination to uplift the school.

“I bought those 15 new desks from the little amounts I normally collect from the small kiosks around St Mary's Primary School”.

Fr. Elia also noted that for too long, students had been resigned to sitting on the floor, a situation borne out of financial constraints that had plagued the school. However, thanks to the relentless efforts of the headteacher and the unwavering support of the community, this predicament has now been alleviated.

“The pupils were very happy to receive the new desks from the struggle of the headteacher of St. Mary primary school. It's their first time since they have been sitting down on the flow for a year. This development gives motivation for the learners to be in class”.

By creatively sourcing funds from nearby kiosks, Fr. Elia showed his commitment to the well-being and education of the students. His initiative not only provided physical comfort by alleviating the need for students to sit on the floor but also sent a powerful message of love, concern, and care from the school administration.

The students' joy at receiving the new desks is a testament to the positive effects of Fr. Elia's efforts. This improvement in the learning environment will undoubtedly motivate the students to engage more actively in their studies and foster a sense of pride and belonging within the school community.
