Following the missing of Fr. Luke Yugue and his driver Mr. Michael Gbeko, bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala has appealed to the president of South Sudan, H.E Salvakir Mayardid to intervene for their release.
“I am writing to seek Your Excellency's intervention for the release and safety of one of my Priests Rev. Fr. Luke Yugue and his driver Mr. Michael Gbeko, have both missing for the last two days between Nagero County and Tombura County”.
In his letter dated 29th April 2024, the prelate narrated that “the priest had gone on a pastoral mission to serve the people of God in Nagero County where he has been working. On his return on 27th April 2024, we lost contact with him to date”.
He further said that the area where they were last seen falls under the control of the SPLM/ (IO) forces, adding to our apprehension about their well-being. Despite our efforts, including reaching out to the Governor of Western Equatoria State and local authorities, we have been unable to ascertain their whereabouts or ensure their safe return.
Pleading with the president he added, your Excellency, as the leader of our nation, we implore you to intervene in this matter with utmost urgency. The lives of Rev. Father Luke and Mr. Michael Gbeko are at stake, and we believe that your intervention is crucial to ensuring their safe release. We understand the gravity of the situation and the complexities involved, which is why we humbly request your direct involvement.
Furthermore, he appealed that “given the alarming state of affairs in Tombura County, we urge you to consider imposing a state of emergency to address the escalating crisis and safeguard the lives of all citizens, including those of religious leaders like Fr. Luke.
He noted that his prompt response to this appeal would be greatly appreciated and would provide much-needed hope to the community awaiting the safe return of their beloved priest and his driver.
With sincere prayers for peace and justice,
