“Use English Language to Support Learners Understanding”, Director General’s Message to Teachers as he Inspect BRAC’s Activities

The director general of the national ministry of general education, Mr. Samuel Dem Marier paid visit to Yambio to inspect activities run by BRAC in its learning centers.

In his speech, he urged teachers in Western Equatoria State to simply lesson delivery in order to support learner understanding, instead of explaining given topic in mother tongue, it’s a mistake for a teacher to explain a topic in mother tongue to learner, which can hinder the understanding of learners.

“So we need our teachers to teach in English language. The mistake comes when you as a teacher see your learner  wondering about the topic, then you said I want to make him or her understand by explaining in mother tongue, that is a very big mistake” he explained.

“Please you support that understanding my making some examples, make about bright examples. You can make about three or four examples in English, you prepare your teaching aids. So you emphasis more examples than talking in mother tongue” Marier stated.

The director general however, called on the teachers in Western Equatoria State to fully implement the new South Sudan curriculum known as Competent Based Curriculum.

He also applauded BRAC for its effort to open up learning centers to adults and initiating community empowerment programs.

On the other hand, Mrs. Moureen, the head of BRAC in Yambio said; “BRAC is an International entity, operating in six of the country’s ten states. With its current projects relies on: Community Based Education, Communities Rise, Third-Party Monitoring of the South Sudan Safety Net project and the Enhancing Community Resilience and Local Governance project.

Moureen added that through the Community Based Education for Out-Of-School Girls and Vulnerable Children project, BRAC South Sudan works closely with the government and communities to establish schools and learning centers hire and train teachers and enroll students, and plays an instrumental role in developing teaching and learning materials that are used throughout the country.

BRAC is a leading international nonprofit organization with a mission to empower people and communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease, and social injustice.
