LM Completes 15-Day Training for 15 Teachers on Brain and Sign Language in Yambio County

In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance inclusivity in education organized by “The Lakarmissionen (LM) Swedish organization, a 15-day training program concluded in Yambio County on Wednesday 5th June 2024, equipping 15 teachers and four education department officials with essential brain function and sign language knowledge.  

Led by educational experts, the training sought to empower teachers with innovative techniques to cater to learners with diverse learning needs. The teachers were drawn from Nakpangua, Gitikiri, and Kidi primary schools in Yambio.

Speaking at the closing of the training LM international coordinator in Western Equatoria State Morris Kumbo, underscored the significance of the training in supporting learners with special needs in their schools.

Mr. Kumbo said the intensive training delved into the intricacies of brain development and its implications for teaching methodologies, citing participants engaged in practical sessions, learning how to adapt teaching strategies to accommodate various learning styles, particularly focusing on learners with hearing impairments.

He added that the training emphasized the importance of sign language as a vital tool for communication and comprehension among individuals with hearing disabilities.

“Teachers received comprehensive instruction on sign language basics, enabling them to effectively communicate with and instruct learners who rely on visual communication methods”, Kumbo stated.   

On the other hand, Mr. Bouza Nyari the education inclusive officer with LM International, underscored that after the training the teachers will support learners since the aim of training was to promote inclusive education.

The initiative received commendation from local education authorities, who highlighted its significance in promoting inclusive education practices within the county.

Rhoda Elisa Tara, the director for equity and inclusive education in the state ministry of education in Western Equatoria lauded the LM International for supplementing the work of her department.  

She noted that as education continues to evolve, initiatives like this serve as a testament to the ongoing dedication to ensuring equitable access to quality education for all.

“This training represents a significant step forward in our efforts to create an inclusive learning environment for all learners. We are grateful to LM International for their commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for all."

Adam Gabriel Modi, head of teachers at Nakpangua Primary School and a participant in the training, assured members of transformation in his school, stressing that teachers in his school will excel through the 15 days of knowledge acquisition on brain and sign language.
