CDTY Condemns False Social Media Rumors Regarding Alleged Seizure of Church Vehicle

The Catholic Diocese of Tombura Yambio (CDTY) has vehemently denounced rumors circulating on social media alleging that “one of its vehicles was seized by security agents for transporting machine guns, and food items”.

 A viral social media post claimed that a vehicle belonging to the diocese, ostensibly carrying food supplies for internally displaced persons in Tombura, was intercepted at the Bazungua checkpoint. The post further alleged that security officials discovered a cache of new machine guns alongside the food items, prompting the vehicle's detention at national security premises in Yambio.

Rev. Fr. Dominic Agbia Sasa, the diocesan chancellor of CDTY, categorically refuted these claims in the press statement, asserting that national security forces have apprehended no vehicle owned by the diocese under any circumstances related to weapons.

He clarified, "The national security in Yambio has confirmed to us that no vehicle loaded with food items and guns has been seized at the Bazungua checkpoint."

The statement further states the stand of the Catholic Church's unwavering commitment to non-violence, love, and compassion principles. “The Church and its social teaching do not stand for violence. The core teaching of the Church and practice is about love, compassion, reconciliation, and peaceful co-existence”.

Fr. Sasa emphasized, "These allegations are not only false but are intended to smear the reputation of the Church. We stand firm in our mission to promote peace, reconciliation, and unity among all people”.

Addressing the detrimental effects of such misinformation, the statement deplored its potential to sow discord and fear within the community. "We urge those behind these baseless accusations to cease their efforts to tarnish the Church's image and instead join us in fostering harmony and understanding”.

Despite the malicious intent behind the rumors, the diocese reaffirmed its dedication to its core values and vowed to continue its mission of advocating for justice and promoting a culture of peace. The statement concluded with a call for prayers for the perpetrators of such falsehoods, expressing hope for their transformation into proponents of unity and compassion.
