The State Minister of General Education and Instruction, Hon. Grace Apollo, has announced that the Girls’ Education South Sudan (GESS) cash transfer payments will commence this October.
The GESS cash transfer program provides direct payments to girls and learners with disabilities who are registered and regularly attending school.
Historically, the program has supported girls from primary 5 to senior 4. However, this year’s cash transfer will focus on girls in primary 7 to secondary school 4, and those enrolled in the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) at levels 3 and 4.
Notably, for the first time, boys with disabilities in these eligible classes and ALP levels will also benefit from the program.
Hon. Grace Apollo stated the cash payments aim to empower learners to continue their education by enabling them to purchase necessary materials.
"This money is not for Christmas but to support their educational needs," she emphasized.
She also revealed that under the new payment structure, learners with disabilities will receive 120,000 South Sudanese pounds, while other learners will receive 95,000 South Sudanese pounds.
Mr. John Gaaniko, a representative of GESS, noted that the focus is to increase enrollment among girls and boys with disabilities in upper primary and secondary schools.
