Bishop Hiiboro Urged the Community to Shift from Negative Perceptions of Wealth Acquisition
By Baraka John
Bishop Edwardo Hiiboro of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio (CDTY) addressed the pervasive negative attitudes toward wealth acquisition in local communities, urging residents to recognize that prosperity is a blessing from God, often earned through hard work and perseverance.
Bishop Hiiboro's remarks come in response to a troubling belief prevalent among some community members: rapid wealth is often gained through rituals or unethical means.
This mindset is particularly prevalent in lower-income areas, where educational resources are scarce and superstitions thrive.
While addressing congregants during the celebration of the centenary of the Legion of Mary in the diocese he said “Instead of celebrating each other’s successes, too many people are quick to assume the worst,” the bishop stated. “If someone buys a new vehicle or builds a house, they are unjustly accused of using dark practices to obtain their fortune. This is not only harmful but a direct insult to the grace of God.”
He further narrated, “When a family member dies and another member experiences financial success, the community jumps to conclusions, attributing the wealth to sinister means rather than recognizing hard work and divine favor”.
Bishop Hiiboro called for a collective reframing of these beliefs, encouraging individuals to trust in God’s plan and the legitimacy of others’ achievements. “Let us uplift one another and celebrate our blessings, rather than tearing each other down with baseless accusations.”
He also called for collaborative efforts with sisterly Churches for educational initiatives to combat superstitions and promote understanding of wealth creation.
