“When I became the governor, security has been my first priority, but following my recent visit to Yambio hospital, and seeing the dire situation there, I have decided that hygiene and sanitation will be among the things I have to consider.” Those were the words of the governor of Western Equatoria State Hon. Alfred Futuyo as he addressed the media on Friday, August 14 in Yambio.
He said that a healthy and hygienic environment is something that every citizen in his state deserves and thus declared the 14th day of every month as a day that all counties in Western Equatoria state will be carrying out an environmental cleanup.
During his visit to Yambio Hospital, Governor Futuyo delivered 50 mattresses, 15-bed shits, mosquito nets, and soaps among other items. He promised to work on all the challenges the hospital is currently experiencing citing that the health of all citizens is valuable.
Expressing his gratitude to the governor following the donations, the director of Yambio hospital Dr. Kumbo Victor said that they will make sure that cleanliness at the hospital is well maintained. He further asked the governor to tackle the challenges the hospital is facing, especially lack of an X-Ray machine, toilets, beds, and staff salaries among others. He also asked the governor to improve the security of the hospital.
As per the governor’s directives, the monthly cleanup exercise will not only be done in hospitals but in all public places such as markets and schools.
The decision by Governor Futuyo of considering a healthy, clean and hygienic environment in Western Equatoria State is in line with Pope Francis’ call in his Encyclical Laudato Si,(Caring for our common home). The exercise will be done voluntarily in the state according to the governor.
