A Bountiful Response to Bishop Eduardo's Call for Agricultural Initiative

WHAT ARE YOU HARVESTING THIS SEASON?

By Sr. Henriette Anne, FSSA

As the rainy season bestows its blessings upon the Catholic Diocese of Tombura Yambio (CDTY), parishioners and institutions are reaping the rewards of their commitment to Bishop Eduardo's call for one-acre farms. In a proactive move to counter dwindling support from international funding partners, the bishop urged all under the diocese's umbrella to embrace agriculture, drawing inspiration from biblical teachings on cultivation and stewardship.

In his reflection on Genesis 2:15, Bishop Eduardo emphasized the divine mandate to cultivate and keep the land. This spiritual call to action became the impetus for a diocesan-wide initiative aimed at achieving food security and providing a surplus for the vulnerable among them.

In his June 26, 2023 statement, the Catholic Bishop highlighted the challenges posed by decreasing donor support from Europe and the USA. Faced with this stark reality, he advocated for a shift in mindset and a practical approach to ensure sustenance for the diocese.

Responding to the call, parishes and institutions across the diocese embarked on the mission to establish one-acre farms during the planting season from July to October. While the directive sets a minimum obligation of one acre, it encourages creativity and allows for additional cultivation if the capacity allows.

To support this initiative, Bishop Eduardo permitted the use of Sunday collections twice a month. Special fundraisers were also encouraged to finance the agricultural projects. This not only fosters financial independence but also strengthens the sense of community and shared responsibility.

The bishop's directive acknowledges the diversity of the diocesan landscape, allowing flexibility in choosing crops based on the nature of the land. Suggestions range from maize and sesame to sorghum, beans, or groundnuts. Regular reporting and updates ensure transparency and keep the faithful informed about the progress of the farming activities.

As the diocese now stands on the brink of harvesting the fruits of their labor, a palpable sense of hope pervades the community. The agricultural initiative has not only addressed immediate concerns about food security but has also instilled a deeper sense of self-sufficiency and resilience in the face of external challenges.

Bishop Eduardo's visionary call to action is transforming the landscape of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura Yambio. The fields, once fallow, are now teeming with life, symbolizing a community's determination to face challenges head-on and create a sustainable future. As they gather the fruits of their labor, the diocese stands united in the triumph of hope, resilience, and a shared commitment to shaping their destiny.

In addition, the CDTY also offers certificate and Diploma Courses in Agriculture at Sustainable Agricultural Rural for Development (SARD) Institute located in Yambio.

We appeal to generous donors/Parishes/Institution and all people of good will to extend their support to aspiring individuals who wish to enroll in certificate and diploma courses in agriculture at the SARD Institute in Yambio through the CDTY. Your contribution will empower these students to acquire valuable skills in sustainable agriculture, fostering positive change and sustainable development in our communities
