By Sr. Henriette Anne, FSSA

At a workshop organized by Sun Rays Foundation (SRF) under the leadership of Mr. Simon Mikanipare on South Sudanese Peace and Leadership Mentorship Workshop, at Rosa Mystica Spiritual Center in Nairobi, Kenya, Mr. Stephene Darunga looking into social media and hate speech, told the participants to consider combating hate speech as the country is hoping to prepare for the election this year.

Addressing over 40 South Sudanese students from Juba, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Kenya, Darunga stated that hate speech causes harm at a personal level, incites violence, leads to attack on inclusion, diversity, and human rights, and undermines social cohesion and erodes shared values, stressing to the students to always remember ways of combating hate speech.

In his presentation on 21st March 2024, Darunga reminded the students to always pause and think before spreading hate speech, fact-check information from social media before sharing, react and challenge negative use of social media, support each other, report any case of hate speech, educate each other on how to use social media effectively and always commit in doing good at all times.

On the second day of the workshop, the students will be taken through entrepreneurship and financial literacy, communication etiquette, peace, reconciliation, and conflict resolution, and finally speech from the keynote speaker. PLO Lumumba.
